The novel follows two characters, Lillian, who suffers from lung disease, and Clerfayt, a race car driver, in the period shortly after the end of World War II. Their brief romance takes them through Paris, Rome, and Monte Carlo. The book poses philosophical questions about the value of life in the face of inevitable death.
