Flotsam

by Erich Maria Remarque

Flotsam follows two displaced persons, Steiner and Kern, who must navigate the borders of Europe in 1939 as Nazi influence expands. While evading officials after overstaying in Czechoslovakia, they travel unpaved roads, sell shoelaces and safety pins, and encounter hardships and brief moments of joy, including visits to Paris and experiences of love. The novel depicts their struggle to survive amid the cruelty and laws of the Nazi regime.
