Understanding building automation systems

by Reinhold A. Carlson

The development of micro electronics and advances in digital technology have revolutionized building control systems. HVAC, lighting and other building systems controlled by traditional pneumatics, timers, switches, and thermostats may appear to function well. But slow response, calibration shifts, mechanical wear, and inability to coordinate operations with other systems results in wasted energy and inconsistent levels of comfort. On the other hand, Direct Digital Control (DDC) connected to a central computer can integrate all building systems...performing complex control sequences automatically...improving building environments and lowering costs at the same time.
