Wall

by Marlen Haushofer

After a planetary disaster, an ordinary woman finds herself isolated in a chalet deep within an Austrian forest, separated from the rest of the world by an invisible wall beyond which life appears frozen. She records her experiences in a diary while arranging her survival with familiar animals, confronting the forest, weather, and illness. The narrative portrays the daily struggle of labor, solitude, and fear as the core of her human experience.
