The Trail-driving Rooster

by Fred Gipson

A rooster named Dick with his brothers and sisters are put on the chuck wagon of a cattle drive, going from Oakville, Texas to Dodge City, Kansas. The cook had no trouble with the rest of the flock, but Dick didn't think much of being fried and took off. The men finally decided any chicken with that much spunk deserved to live, so they adopted him. Dick played a big roll in dealing with some Indians, with a stampede, and with a restaurant owner who wouldn't serve the African-American cook.
