In the last decade, scholars in history and the social sciences have manifested a fascination with the development of the professions in America. The Professions in American History is an attempt to bridge the gap between the humanities and the workaday world by presenting stimulating accounts of the historical forces that have shaped such professions as law, medicine, business management, engineering, science, journalism, the clergy, and the military, and of the roles that these professions have played in American society.
