Mayombe

by Pepetela.

Pepetela's novel of the Angolan war of independence, set among MPLA guerrillas in the Mayombe forest of Cabinda. Chapters rotate through different fighters' voices, and the conflicts that matter are internal: ethnic suspicion between Kimbundu and Kikongo, doctrine against practice, and a commander caught between them. Pepetela fought in that war himself. It was published in 1980 and is unusually candid for a novel written from inside a liberation movement.
