Life, Ritual, and Religion Among the Lacandon Maya (Wadsworth Modern Anthropology Library)

by R. Jon McGee

This book examines the contemporary culture of one of the few remaining non-Christian Indian groups in Mexico, the northern Lancandon Maya of Southeast Chiapas. In particular, it focuses on the religious beliefs and practices of these people. The greater part of the research for this book was conducted in the Lancandon village of Naja, the last fully non-Christian Lancandon settlement, with brief visits made to two other principal Lancandon settlements, Mensabak and Lancanha Sayab. A central theme in the book is the relationship among Lancandon religion, mythology, history and the everyday lives of contemporary Lancandones.
