True, this new breed seemed to be unusually powerful and amazingly intelligent, with a disturbingly voracious appetite and a strange lack of fear of man. But, after all, rats had lived in our great cities since time immemorial, and they had always been kept under control. It was only when the bones of the first devoured victims were discovered that the true nature and power of these swarming black creatures with their razor-sharp teeth and taste for human blood began to be realized by a panic-stricken world. For millions of years man and rats had been natural enemies. But now for the first time--suddenly, shockingly, horribly-- the balance of power had shifted to The Rats.
