The Elemental North
The Elemental North brings together paintings and works of art by a collection of remarkable individuals, each working in relative artistic isolation in the north of England and determined to push the boundaries of their art, to develop their own personal visual language. The sources and influences that underlie their work are as diverse as their art. Although all look for inspiration to the work of past painters, they are not concerned with contemporary fashion. Distance from the capital, and native northern wariness, have perhaps helped them to maintain an artistic integrity. But the countryside in which they work is a major source of inspiration. A common background of moor and coast has infiltrated their work, lending it a power that relates to the rugged, elemental nature of the land around them.
