Inside Mr Enderby
The first Enderby novel. F. X. Enderby is a minor poet who writes in his lavatory, lives on scraps, and is entirely unfitted for the literary success that arrives and the marriage that follows it. Burgess is very funny about the gap between the poetry, which he actually wrote and includes, and the squalid circumstances producing it. Published under the pseudonym Joseph Kell in 1963, which Burgess then notoriously reviewed himself.
