Azteca

by Gary Jennings

The book presents a narrative of the clash between two civilizations and their incompatible worldviews. In 1530, Emperor Charles requests information about the customs of American Indians; Bishop Juan de Zumárraga forwards an autobiographical account by a sixty‑year‑old indigenous man, Nube Oscura (Mixtli), detailing his childhood, community mentality, education, and turbulent loves. The story concludes with Moctezuma’s emissary meeting Hernán Cortés’s forces, being baptized as Juan Damasceno while retaining Aztec traditions.
