Her family needs the marriage settlement and the Earl tells Claire he is not looking for any affection so she reluctantly accepts his proposal. When the Earl catches Claire on an assignation to say good-bye to her Major their marriage begins on shaky ground. Nicholas has secrets of his own, including the fact that he has proposed to Claire expecting to die very soon.
