The Disowned Self.

by Nathaniel Branden

An early work by the psychotherapist Nathaniel Branden, who is best known for his writing on self-esteem. Here he examines what he calls the disowned self: the way people learn to suppress or deny their own feelings until they lose touch with parts of who they are. Branden argues for reconnecting reason and emotion rather than treating them as enemies, and draws on his clinical practice to show what that reintegration looks like. It is a short, argument-driven book of popular psychology from the early 1970s, written before much of the self-esteem movement he helped shape had taken hold.
