Summons to Memphis
Peter Taylor's novel, which won the Pulitzer in 1987. Phillip Carver, a middle-aged editor in New York, is summoned home by his sisters to stop their widowed father remarrying. The book is really about an earlier move, when the family left Nashville for Memphis and each of the children's lives quietly bent around it. Taylor writes in long, mannered, retrospective sentences, and the damage is all indirect. Very much a novel of the upper South.
