Purity of blood
The story follows Diego Alatriste and Tenerio as they prepare to join a regiment in Flanders. Their friend Quevedo asks them to rescue Elvira, a young woman confined to a convent, whose case may involve a murder of a woman strangled in a chair. The narrative also touches on the Inquisition's influence over Madrid during Philip IV's reign.
