These are the first five stories of the transmogrified childhood of the writer, Alex Ferguson, who was born in Jarrow on Tyne in good time for the Great Depression and who was fortunate enough to have an imaginative Uncle Freddie released from employment most generously by Mr. Palmer, the proprietor of Palmers’ Shipyard, to share that childhood. The boy, born into what might be described as deprived circumstances was, in fact, as rich as Croesus because he lived among people who loved him. Given the least encouragement Alex Ferguson would gladly tell you more stories of Uncle Freddie & Lecky Fergie.
