Where's the F in Reggae

by John Bailey

A light hearted story giving a fresh slant on the emerging skinhead subculture of 69...............................................................................The story does contain language that would be archetypal of four young lads of school leaving age. There are also references to sexual endeavour........................................ Follow the fortunes and misfortunes of Boss and his mates. Johnny Boswell aka Boss is a young lad trying to find his identity in the late 60's. He's not overly aggressive but has acquired a penchant to demonstrate an overload of high jinks. He discovers his roots lie in the emerging skinhead subculture with reggae at its heart. The year is 1969, the austerity of the post war period is truly a thing of the past for the youth with the psychedelic 60's well into full swing. Beads, flowers and bells and a lazy Sunday afternoon feeling running through the week was the subculture for the new generation of hippies. The mods who earlier in the decade were well known for their sharp dressing had now grown into adult hood but coming up behind them were their younger brothers who could not empathise with the hippie attitude. They had to somehow fashion an identity of their own. Musical taste was a very important statement for the hippies who followed on from the mods and the greasers who followed on from the rockers, the arch enemy of the mod....................................................................................................Friday night soon comes around and Boss is looking well dressed wearing his new Levi jacket over his checked Ben Sherman shirt. His Levi Sta-Prest are held up by white bracers and is suitably booted with his highly polished DM's. Dave comments "hey you're looking full sharp tonight!"Extract copyright John Bailey 2017
