The return voyage of the British freighter 'Maree Tarn, from China to England was at first dis-quiting, then clearly sinister, to her Captain, John Lownie. His ship had been delayed in Shanghai following a peculiar accident; his chief engineer had been arrested, publicly tried and finally released; his radio officer had been shot for no apparent reason; and his passenger list showed some unusual voyagers.
