Beware of pity

by Stefan Zweig

Set on the eve of World I, the novel follows a poor young officer stationed in a small Austrian town who feels compassion for a wealthy young invalid. This compassion gives rise to a passionate love that Edith of Kekesfalva holds for lieutenant Anton Hofmiller. Their doomed affection culminates in a tragic ending, presented as a nostalgic portrait of a society soon to be condemned by history.
