Wild Heritage

by Williams, Mary

'WILD HERITAGE' tells of a girl's determination to retain her Cornish home and lands which have deteriorated under her improvident artist father's neglect. Eventually she marries a wealthy American with philanthropic plans which she resents, but ultimately has to accept, for the sake of her young half brother and half sister. Set against the wild background of West Penwith, her possessiveness, ever at war with her deeply emotional temperament, reflects the conflicting elements of the rugged Cornish Coast, creating a love-hate relationship with her strong minded and equally determined husband, which is resolved only after considerable tragedy. The underlying theme of the book is meant to portray something of the inherent Cornish independence which is fundamentally mistrustful of change; a quality bred from generations of seafaring, mining, and farming folk.
