Focusing

by Eugene T. Gendlin

Eugene Gendlin's method for attending to the vague bodily sense that accompanies a problem before it has words. Focusing came out of research at Chicago on why some therapy clients improved and others did not: the difference, Gendlin found, was whether they could refer to a felt sense in the body rather than only talking about their situation. The book teaches the six-step process directly, so it is usable without a therapist. Short, practical, and influential well outside psychotherapy.
