Burden
One of the six novels Agatha Christie wrote under the pen name Mary Westmacott, away from her detective fiction. The Burden is a quiet psychological story about two sisters, the intense and protective Laura and her younger sister Shirley, and the way love can become a heavy, controlling force over a lifetime. There is no murder to solve; it is a study of character and family feeling. Readers who know Christie only from Poirot and Marple are often surprised by these straight novels. A good change of pace for a Christie-curious club.
