Black feeling, Black talk, Black judgement
Nikki Giovanni's first two collections published together, from 1968, written out of the Black Arts Movement while she was in her mid-twenties. The poems move between political fury and domestic tenderness, sometimes in the same piece, and several became widely recited: Nikki-Rosa, with its insistence that Black childhood not be narrated by white biographers, is the best known. Short, direct, and deliberately spoken rather than literary.
