Bel-Ami
Bel‑Ami follows Georges Duroy, a young man who rises to prominence in late‑nineteenth‑century Paris. The novel examines money, sex, and power amid the politics of French colonialism in North Africa, and satirizes the corruption of contemporary journalism. It portrays an urban society whose dynamics resemble those of the present, and is regarded as a record of the rise of bourgeois capitalism during the Third Republic.
