My Chincoteague Pony

by Susan Jeffers

This charming story was inspired by â¿¿Misty of Chincoteagueâ¿¿ by Marguerite Henry, the favorite book of Julie, the character in this story. Julie wants to have her own pony and persuades her family to take her to Chincoteague island in Virginia on Pony Penning Day. Every year the townâ¿¿s volunteer fireman swim the ponies from their island home to the mainland so they can auction some of them to buyers in the crowd. Julie wants to buy a pony but doesnâ¿¿t have enough money to keep bidding. But one pony is returned and people in the crowd contribute money so that Julie can buy it. She is grateful and promises to help another girl buy her own pony at next yearâ¿¿s auction. Includes beautiful full-color illustrations of the ponies, island sunsets, and the pony roundup.
