by Bruce Brooks

Midway through the twenty-first century, fourteen-year-old Sam controls many lives. Determined to protect his younger brother, Ollie, from their alcoholic mother, he sets up what he considers to be the picture-perfect foster home. He's also determined to have his mother released from the hospital, and to help her put her life back in order. He rents an apartment, buys her clothes, and even finds her a job. But then something happens that Sam does not plan. And he must come to terms with the fact that even in the twenty-first century there are feelings and situations that cannot be controlled.
