Caroline Fortune is used to 'making do', her prodigal father loses all they possess and she starts to look for employment as a governess. Caroline's father has arranged a position for her with the formidable Mrs Catling. Caroline is uncomfortable with the plan but makes the most of this introduction to polite society and discovers that love and romance are not what some 'gentlemen' seek.
