Eclipse of the Crescent Moon
A Hungarian historical novel by Geza Gardonyi, known in the original as Egri csillagok, here in English translation. It follows a cast of Hungarian defenders in the years leading up to the 1552 siege of the fortress at Eger, where a small garrison held out against a far larger Ottoman army. Blending adventure, romance, and national history, it is one of the best-loved novels in Hungary and often read there in school. For a book club it offers a sweeping, old-fashioned historical epic and a window into how a nation remembers a founding stand.
