I'm Sorry Almira Ann: On the Oregon Trail

by Jane Kurtz

Sarah thinks leaving Missouri for Oregon in the 1850s is going to be a grand adventure. Grandmother is skeptical that she is responsible enough for the journey. Once she's out in the Great American Desert with hailstones as big as eggs, buffalo chips for burning in fires, dust, rivers to cross, ravines for her cow to fall into, and fights with Almira Ann, Sarah starts to worry that Grandmother might be right. After she takes a risk and climbs high on Independence Rock to sign their names, Almira Ann is seirously cross with Sarah. And THEN, there is a terrible accident. Almira Ann might not even be able to continue on toward Oregon. How can one young girl figure out a way to adequately say "I'm sorry"? Might Soda Springs be part of the solution? Sarah has to reach deep inside to find her way. This middle grade fiction story includes many details from real children's accounts of travleing the Oregon Trail. The author draws on her own family stories and those of others to show details of the long, tough trip to Oregon.
