The Story of Little Black Sambo

by Helen Bannerman

Sambo is a South Indian boy who lives with his father and mother, named Black Jumbo and Black Mumbo respectively. While out walking, Sambo encounters four hungry tigers, and he surrenders his colourful new clothes, shoes and umbrella so that they will not eat him. First published in 1899, contemporary critics observed that Bannerman presented one of the first black heroes in children's literature and the book has charmed generations of readers ever since.
