Kurunmi
Ola Rotimi's historical tragedy about Kurunmi, the Are-Ona-Kakanfo and generalissimo of Ijaye, who went to war rather than accept a break with Yoruba custom over the succession in Oyo. The Ijaye war of the 1860s destroys him and his sons. Rotimi writes it as classical tragedy with a Yoruba subject, heavy with proverb and ritual, and the point is a man undone by a principle he cannot bend.
