Structure of Science
Ernest Nagel's 1961 study of scientific explanation, one of the major statements of logical empiricism. It works through what counts as a law, how theories relate to observation, and the conditions under which one science reduces to another, then applies the analysis separately to physics, biology and the social sciences. The chapters on reduction and on explanation in history remain the reference points people argue with. Demanding, and still cited sixty years on.
